Best Rooftop Restaurants for Sunset
A good rooftop table at sunset is one of the simplest, most reliable ways to have a great evening in Marrakech.
Pick the view before you pick the restaurant
“Rooftop” covers several completely different Marrakech experiences. A terrace over Jemaa el-Fna is about movement and noise below. A higher Medina roof is about minarets and the old-city skyline. A Kasbah terrace can open toward the Atlas on a clear day, while Hivernage rooftops feel more like polished hotel lounges. Decide which view you actually want before choosing from a list of restaurants.
For Koutoubia and Medina atmosphere
The Medina is the classic choice for first-time visitors. Current official tourism listings include Kabana, which advertises Koutoubia views alongside food, cocktails and music, and the Rooftop of the Museum of Moroccan Elegance, which promotes Medina and Atlas views. These are useful current examples, but rooftop ownership, menus and sightlines can change — verify the exact terrace before booking.
For a polished Hivernage evening
Hivernage is a better fit if you want lifts, hotel service and a lounge-style evening rather than a narrow staircase above the souks. The official tourism listing for Hivernage Hotel & Spa currently identifies MySky Rooftop Lounge among its dining and bar spaces. For a modern rooftop outside the Medina
M Avenue and the wider modern-city area offer a different setting again. Visit Marrakech currently lists Le Douar on the rooftop of Meydene on M Avenue, centred on Moroccan cuisine in an open-air setting. This is the better direction if you care more about a designed dining experience than a classic Medina panorama.
Sunset timing matters more than people expect
Book for roughly 30–45 minutes before sunset if the changing light is the point of the evening. Sunset time varies substantially through the year, so check it for your exact date rather than using a generic “7 pm” rule. Our weather guide gives the broader seasonal picture.
Ask one specific question when booking: “Can you reserve an outdoor table with an unobstructed west-facing or skyline view?” A rooftop reservation alone does not guarantee the table you saw in photographs.
Jemaa el-Fna view or quiet skyline?
A square-facing terrace gives you one of the best people-watching positions in the city, especially after dark. The trade-off is noise, demand and sometimes a menu priced partly for the view. Deeper Medina rooftops are usually better for a slower meal. Neither is objectively superior; choose based on the evening you want.
Food quality versus “view tax”
Do not assume the best skyline automatically comes with the best kitchen. If food is the priority, check recent menus and reviews for the meal itself, not only sunset photographs. Alcohol and rooftop bars
Some rooftops serve alcohol and others do not. In Marrakech that distinction matters, so check the live menu before booking if cocktails or wine are part of your plan. Hotel rooftops and licensed modern venues are generally more predictable for bar service than a small Medina restaurant.
Stairs, lifts and accessibility
Traditional Medina buildings may have several flights of narrow stairs and no lift. If mobility is a concern, ask directly about step-free access and whether the terrace itself is reachable by lift. Modern hotels are usually easier, but do not assume every rooftop has accessible final access.
Weather can change the plan
Even after a hot day, an exposed roof can cool quickly once the sun drops. Wind is also more noticeable above the Medina. Carry a light layer outside midsummer and ask whether there is a covered or indoor backup if conditions turn poor.
Reserve carefully in peak periods
For a famous sunset terrace, book ahead in the busier months and around major events. For a casual rooftop tea, same-day often works. Confirm by message where possible so you have the time, party size and table request in writing, especially for birthdays or groups.
Build the evening around the rooftop
