A good rooftop table at sunset is one of the simplest, most reliable ways to have a great evening in Marrakech.
Why rooftops are such a big deal here
The Medina's flat roofs, built for exactly this purpose in a hot climate, give Marrakech one of its best free assets: near-constant rooftop views over a low-rise old city, usually with the Koutoubia minaret or the Atlas Mountains somewhere in the frame. Ground-level dining is fine, but a rooftop at the right hour adds an entire extra dimension to a meal.
What to look for when choosing one
- Orientation. A west-facing terrace catches the actual sunset; some rooftops face the wrong way and are better for lunch or night views instead.
- Height and openness. Taller buildings or terraces without high surrounding walls give a genuine skyline view rather than a glimpse between neighbouring roofs.
- Proximity to Jemaa el-Fna. Terraces directly overlooking the square offer a different kind of view — the energy of the square itself rather than a quiet skyline — worth choosing deliberately based on which you want.
Timing your visit

Areas to consider
- Around Jemaa el-Fna — several long-established terraces here look directly over the square; expect them to be busier and slightly pricier for the view.
- Deeper in the Medina — quieter rooftop riad restaurants tend to offer a calmer, more intimate setting, often with a more considered menu.
- Kasbah — terraces here often look toward the Atlas Mountains rather than the square, a good option on a clear winter day when the peaks are snow-capped.
Booking tips
Well-known sunset terraces fill up, especially in peak season — book ahead where possible, particularly for a table with a confirmed view rather than a general reservation. Many riad restaurants take bookings by WhatsApp, which is often faster than email.
