What it actually is
Agafay is often described as a "stone desert" — it's not the sand dunes people picture when they think Sahara, but a rocky, sun-baked plateau about 30–40 minutes from Marrakech. What it lacks in dunes it makes up for in accessibility: this is the desert experience you can fit into an evening, not a multi-day trip.
What to do there
- Sunset viewing — the most popular reason to come; the light over the rocky terrain with the Atlas Mountains as a backdrop is genuinely dramatic.
- Camel rides — short rides are widely offered, usually timed around sunset.
- Quad biking & buggy tours — popular half-day activity add-ons.
- Desert camps — several permanent luxury camps offer dinner-and-show evenings or overnight stays with proper beds, a good "desert experience" option for travellers short on time for the real Sahara.
