Atlas Mountains & Imlil
Snow-capped peaks within sight of a desert city — the High Atlas is closer than most visitors expect.
Getting there
Imlil, the main gateway village for the High Atlas, is roughly 1.5 hours' drive from Marrakech — noticeably closer than the Ourika Valley route on the other side of the range. Most visitors go by organised day tour or private driver; the winding mountain roads make it a less relaxing self-drive than routes closer to the city.
What to expect
Imlil sits at the base of Jbel Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak, and is the starting point for multi-day treks to its summit — not something to attempt as a day trip, but the surrounding trails offer excellent shorter walks through walnut groves and Berber villages with views of the peak itself. A typical day trip combines a village walk, a stop for mint tea with a local family, and time to simply take in the scenery, which shifts dramatically from Marrakech's flat, dry plain within an hour's drive.
By season
Winter (roughly December–March): Snow is common at altitude, and Toubkal itself is genuinely snow-capped — dramatic to see from below, but treks require proper winter gear and experience.
Spring and autumn: The most comfortable months for walking, with wildflowers in spring.

How much time to give it
A day trip (roughly 8am–6pm from Marrakech) is enough for a village walk and a proper taste of the mountains. Multi-day trekkers heading for Toubkal's summit should plan for at least 2–3 days including acclimatisation.
