Essaouira Day Trip
Blue-and-white streets, a working fishing harbour, and Atlantic air that feels a world away from the Medina.
Getting there
Essaouira sits on the Atlantic coast, about 2.5 hours from Marrakech by road each way. CTM and Supratours run comfortable scheduled buses from Marrakech's main bus stations several times a day, making it an easy independent trip. Shared or private grand taxis and organised day tours are the other common options — a tour adds convenience (and usually a stop or two en route) but less flexibility on timing.
What to do once you're there
- The Skala de la Ville — sea-facing ramparts with cannons, and a good spot for photos.
- The port — a genuinely working fishing harbour; watching the day's catch come in is free and interesting even if you're not eating.
- Fresh seafood — grilled at portside stalls, sold by weight, and about as fresh as it gets.
- The Medina — smaller and calmer than Marrakech's, with a strong arts-and-crafts scene, particularly thuya wood carving.
- The beach — long and often windy, popular with kite and windsurfers rather than sunbathers.
Is a day enough?
A full day works well for a first taste — arrive by mid-morning, leave by early evening. If you love the slower pace and coastal air, Essaouira also works well as an overnight add-on to a longer Marrakech trip rather than a rushed there-and-back.
What to pack
Essaouira is noticeably cooler and windier than Marrakech year-round — a light jacket or jumper is worth bringing even in summer, when Marrakech itself is at its hottest (see our weather guide).
