Ourika Valley
The easiest mountain escape from Marrakech — river villages, roadside stalls, and a waterfall walk at the end.
Getting there
The Ourika Valley follows a river south from Marrakech into the foothills of the High Atlas, with the village of Setti Fatma — the usual endpoint — about an hour's drive from the city. It's the closest genuine mountain scenery to Marrakech, which makes it a popular half-day option when time is tight.
What to do
- The drive itself — roadside stalls sell local produce, pottery and rugs, and the scenery shifts quickly from plain to river valley.
- Setti Fatma waterfalls — a series of seven cascades reached by a walking trail from the village; the first two or three falls are an easy walk, further ones require more scrambling.
- Riverside lunch — several restaurants sit directly over the river on platforms, a pleasant, cooler spot to eat than the city.
- Berber villages — many day trips include a stop at a village home or cooperative along the way.
How much time to give it
Half a day covers the drive, a walk to the first waterfalls, and lunch. A full day allows for a longer waterfall hike and more time to simply sit by the river — a good option if the city's pace has caught up with you.
