Ouzoud Waterfalls from Marrakech
Ouzoud is one of Morocco's best-known waterfall landscapes, but from Marrakech it is a full road day. Go for the scenery and walking, not because somebody has sold it as a quick side trip.
What Ouzoud actually is
Ouzoud Falls sit in the Azilal region, east of Marrakech in the Middle Atlas/High Atlas transition. Morocco's national tourism board describes the falls as roughly 100 metres high and presents the wider Azilal area as a major nature and ecotourism destination.
The appeal is bigger than one viewpoint: olive groves, gorge scenery, paths to different perspectives and the cooler feel of a water landscape all make it a genuine contrast with Marrakech.
From Marrakech, allow a full day
Road conditions and pickup patterns matter more than a perfect kilometre calculation. Shared tours often spend a substantial part of the day collecting passengers and driving; a private driver gives more control but costs more. I would treat Ouzoud as the day's main event rather than trying to combine it with another distant excursion.
Shared tour or private driver?
A shared excursion is the easiest option for many first-time visitors: transport is organised, the route is familiar to the operator and you do not need to solve the return journey. Check whether a local guide, lunch, boat ride or other activities are included or optional.
A private driver works better if your group values control over departure time and stops. Before booking, agree the return timing, waiting arrangements and exactly what the quoted price covers.
Going independently
Independent public-transport combinations may be possible, but timetables and the final connection can make the day less predictable than an organised transfer. If you choose this route, verify current same-day return options rather than assuming a connection shown on an old blog still runs at a useful time.
Walking and footwear
Expect uneven surfaces and steps on the paths around the falls. Good grip matters, especially where spray or rain makes stone slippery. You do not need expedition equipment for the normal visitor routes, but sandals chosen only for appearance are a poor match for a day that involves descents and uneven ground.
Water levels and weather change the experience
Waterfall flow and trail conditions can vary with rainfall and season. The national tourism board presents Ouzoud as a year-round nature attraction, but that does not mean every day looks identical. In hot periods, carry water and sun protection; after rain, give slippery paths more respect.
Monkeys: observe rather than manage
Barbary macaques are associated with the Ouzoud area. Do not build the visit around feeding or handling wildlife. Keep food secured, give animals space and follow current local conservation guidance. A close photograph is not worth encouraging risky wildlife behaviour.
Boat rides and optional activities
Small boats near the base can be part of the experience when conditions allow, but treat them as optional rather than the definition of the trip. Ask the price and what the ride includes before boarding. If water or weather conditions look poor, skip it without feeling you missed the waterfall.
Who should choose another day trip?
If your priority is minimal driving, choose Ourika Valley or Agafay. If you want a completely different city and Atlantic air, Essaouira provides a stronger urban contrast. Ouzoud makes most sense when the waterfall and nature walking are themselves the goal.

Ouzoud earns the long day when you want the waterfall itself, not when you are trying to collect one more famous name. Leave early, wear shoes that can handle the paths and give the scenery enough time to justify the road.
