An itinerary is only useful as a starting point, not a script — Marrakech rewards a bit of wandering, and the best trips usually deviate from any plan by day two. What these four routes give you is a sensible default: an order to see things in that respects opening hours, walking distances, and the rhythm of the day (mornings for palaces and gardens before the crowds and heat build, evenings for the Medina's markets and rooftops), so you're not improvising logistics on top of everything else.

Two full days can cover the core Medina experience and a handful of major sights, but four days gives Marrakech room to breathe. With the longer plan you can slow the pace, spend time in Guéliz or Hivernage, and add a day trip without turning every day into a race. If your arrival or departure days are partial, count them as bonus time rather than assuming they function like full sightseeing days.
Plan by area, not by checklist
Marrakech is easier when you group nearby places together. Build one day around the southern Medina and palace area, another around the souks and Jemaa el-Fna, and treat Majorelle/Guéliz as a separate cluster. This cuts unnecessary backtracking and leaves room for the unplanned stops that are often the best part of a Medina day.
Leave space for heat, queues and getting lost
Walking times on a map can be optimistic inside the Medina. Allow extra time for navigation, shopping, tea stops and busy entrances. In hotter months, put outdoor-heavy sightseeing earlier in the day and keep a shaded lunch or hotel break available. A good itinerary has slack built into it; if every hour is allocated, Marrakech will quickly make the plan for you.
When to add a day trip
On a two-day visit, staying in Marrakech usually makes more sense unless a specific excursion is the main reason for your trip. With four days or more, an Atlas, Ourika, Agafay or Essaouira day can provide useful contrast.
