A practical connectivity setup for Marrakech — local SIMs, eSIMs, Wi-Fi, dual-SIM phones and the small settings that prevent roaming surprises.

Marrakech is easy to stay connected in. Morocco has several nationwide mobile operators, and prepaid physical SIMs and eSIM options are widely available. The best choice depends on your phone, trip length and whether you want a local number or data only.
The main networks
Maroc Telecom, Orange Morocco and inwi are the main consumer mobile brands visitors will encounter. Coverage and offers change, so compare the current prepaid package rather than choosing by an old blog post or a screenshot of last year’s prices.
Physical SIM or eSIM?
A physical prepaid SIM is simple if your phone has an unlocked SIM slot. An eSIM is more convenient if your phone supports it and you want to keep your home SIM installed. Orange, Maroc Telecom and inwi all currently advertise eSIM options.
Official eSIM options
Orange Morocco currently offers prepaid physical SIM and eSIM activation, while Maroc Telecom and inwi also publish current eSIM information. Buy through an official channel or recognised retailer rather than an unknown QR-code seller.
Buying after arrival
If you prefer help with setup, use an official operator shop or established authorised seller. Be ready to provide the identification details required to register the line. Keep the SIM packaging or eSIM email until the service is working properly.
Before you pay
Confirm how much data is included, how long it remains valid, whether the bundle includes calls or texts, and what happens when the allowance expires. “Unlimited” can have conditions, so read the current offer rather than assuming every package works the same way.
Phone compatibility
Your handset should be unlocked for another carrier and support the frequencies and SIM format you intend to use. For eSIM, check the exact phone model rather than assuming every version of the same model supports it.
Dual-SIM setup
If you keep your home line active for banking codes, make the Moroccan SIM/eSIM your mobile-data line and disable data roaming on the home line. That reduces the risk of an expensive accidental roaming session while still allowing incoming verification messages.
WhatsApp and your existing number

Most visitor accommodation provides Wi-Fi, but speed and coverage can vary by building. Thick riad walls can create dead spots, so mobile data is useful for maps, ride coordination and messages when you leave the property.
Maps and offline backup
Download an offline map before exploring the Medina and save your riad’s exact map pin, phone number and arrival instructions. A data connection is useful, but it should not be the only way you can find your way back.
Public Wi-Fi
Treat open public Wi-Fi as untrusted. Avoid sensitive banking or account changes on an unknown network unless you have an appropriate secure connection. Mobile data is often the simpler option for important tasks.
If mobile data does not work
Restart the phone, confirm the correct SIM is selected for mobile data, check that the line is activated and inspect any APN instructions supplied by the operator. If it still fails, use the operator’s official support channel or shop rather than random configuration advice.
A sensible setup for most short trips
For a few days, a moderate prepaid data allowance plus accommodation Wi-Fi is usually enough for messaging, maps, bookings and occasional browsing. Heavy video users or remote workers should compare larger current bundles and tethering rules before buying.
